Gustaaf Reurink

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Guus Reurink (1982) is a sports medicine physician and human movement scientist who has a post-doctoral research position at the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine department at the Amsterdam UMC, location AMC. He is also a sports medicine physician at the OLVG hospital and at the professional football club AFC Ajax.

His main research topics are: 1) Prevention and treatment of sports related injuries, especially acute muscle injuries; and 2) Growth related injuries in youth athletes. He (co-)supervises several PhD projects and Sports Medicine registrars in their scientific training.

Gino Kerkhoffs

Chair

Gino Kerkhoffs (1972) is professor and head of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of the Amsterdam University Medical Centers; chair of the Academic Center of Evidence based Sports medicine (ACES), and co-chair of the Amsterdam Collaboration on Health and Safety in Sports (ACHSS), one of the 11 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Centers of Research Excellence for the Prevention of Injury and Promotion of Health in Athletes. His clinical work focusses on sports injuries of the lower extremity and he has been honorary recognized as Team NL Preferred Physician for providing excellent orthopedic medical care to elite athletes by the Dutch National Olympic Committee. His main research topics are:

1. Early detection, diagnosis and (surgical) treatment of ankle cartilage injuries

2. Early detection, diagnosis and (surgical) treatment of muscle injuries of the lower extremity

3. Mental health issues in (elite) athletes.

Through his research Kerkhoffs tries to help athletes to return to sport safely and quickly as well as prevent long term after career sequelae osteoarthritis and mental health problems.

Hans Tol

Staff

Hans Tol is a Sports Medicine Physician at the Amsterdam Medical University Centers (University of Amsterdam), AFC Ajax and visiting professional at Aspetar in Qatar, which is accredited as one of the eleven IOC research Centers.

He is also graduated as a human movement scientist (master VU, Amsterdam). Tol is an expert in conducting randomised controlled trails in the field of tendinopathy, muscle injuries and regenerative medicine, including platelet rich plasma and cell therapy. His interdisciplinary sports medicine research focuses on acute muscle injuries, degenerative tendinopathy, risk factor identification and prevention of sports-related injuries.

Besides his clinical work and research projects, he carried out extensive sports medical fieldwork through positions in professional soccer. Since 2004 he worked for the Royal Dutch Football Association, including the U21 National Team. He played in the highest youth teams of a Dutch professional premier league soccer team (somewhere in a previous century).

Liam Paget

Junior Researcher

Liam Paget is a Medical Doctor and former international rugby player currently working as a PhD candidate at the department of orthopaedic surgery.

His main research topics are:

• Platelet-rich Plasma in the management of ankle osteoarthritis, a double blind randomized controlled trial

• Ankle osteoarthritis and its association with ankle injuries and surgeries in former professional football and rugby players
